Bianchetto
Bianchetto is our white overpaint technique that leaves visible brush strokes and transforms surface into a blank canvas. The white overpaint is an extension of white as a house code. It is applied to garments, objects and interiors, the paint will naturally crack and fade over time, gradually revealing visible signs of use.
Bianchetto was introduced in 1989 by Martin Margiela, who first overpainted a collection of Salvation Army furniture for the Maison’s design studio, in the same year extending the treatment to the Tabi shoe.
Matt finish white paint was chosen to record the story of each object as it naturally marks and shows signs of use. Expressed even in the blouse blanche; covering workspaces, products and team members in white acts as a neutral framework. The technique appears across product categories - bags, Replica Sneakers, Tabi, and ready-to-wear - and house creative expressions.
As part of MaisonMargiela/Folders, conceived by our team to share the ideas and values that define the house, through an exhibition in Chengdu we presented for the first time the personal collections of Tabi collectors from around the world, offering an intimate look at how the silhouette is lived with, preserved, customised, and cherished.
